Ted Owen, chairman and founder, GGL Global Gaming:
“Hi Duarte. Thanks for taking the time to speak with me about the 2008 Digital Games.”
“My name is Ted Owen, and I’m the founder and chairman of GGL Global Gaming. I’m glad you’re interested in speaking with me in greater detail about GGL’s partnership with the China Internet Gaming Organizing Committee to put on a first-of-its-kind Digital Games videogame tournament as the welcome event for the 2008 Summer Olympics in China. I must say that it’s amazing to take part in an event of this magnitude. The Golden Age of videogames is here, and the Digital Games will be the galvanizing moment that both celebrates and legitimizes videogame culture across the globe.”
PLAYLINE|Prism: Can you tell us what is the main objective of Digital Games '08?
Our main objective with the Digital Games is to elevate the culture of gaming to the world stage. We also feel that gaming is a universal activity that crosses all age groups, genders and cultures. These Digital Games will belong to everyone, not just the professional gamers but to the mainstream gamers as well. That is what GGL represents and that is what we will accomplish in Shanghai.
PLAYLINE|Prism: How many phases will DG '08 have?
There will be an online portion that will begin in the next days. Those interested in getting involved can pre-register for the 2008 Digital Games online at http://dg.ggl.com. We will then have regional qualifying live events all over the world. All of those will ultimately feed into Shanghai.
PLAYLINE|Prism: What kind of games we will see at the DG?
While a final list has yet to be announced we do plan on having a variety of games across a variety of genres and platforms. Expect to see everything from sports, first-person shooters, real-time strategy, fighting, driving, casual games, and other categories. These games will represent the entire world of gaming and in that respect it will be in line with the true spirit of the Olympic Games to unite and celebrate culture across the globe. To that end we will have shrink wrap titles, downloadable games as well as console games. We want to make sure everyone has a chance to play.
PLAYLINE|Prism: Do you think the DG will be a success, or does doing this represent a great risk?
Gaming is already the one of the most prominent forms of entertainment in the world. Gaming is a worldwide success story. We are celebrating the success of that culture by bringing every aspect of it to Shanghai and the world stage for four focused days. GGL does not see any risk at all in producing the Digital Games but rather a sense of obligation to present this culture in the best way possible.
PLAYLINE|Prism: Would you like to say something for everyone who reads the i-view on PlayLine, or possibly thank someone associated with DG ‘08?
Your readers and gamers worldwide have brought gaming and its culture to this point. We feel honored to be the organization chosen to represent that passion on the largest stage in the world: the Beijing Olympic Games. The thanks belong to all of you and we will do the best job possible to make everyone proud of our culture. Thank You!
